In Auckland it is estimated that of all (domestic and commercial) waste sent to landfill more than half (57%) is either reusable or recyclable
The West Auckland Resource Centre was set up in 1977 by a group of like-minded people concerned at the large amounts of valuable materials being dumped in landfills, when they could be reused and repurposed.
We are a community led charity run by amazing volunteers, who dedicate time and energy towards ensuring that Aotearoa changes the way it sees ‘waste’.
We believe in a brighter, cleaner future Aotearoa New Zealand where resources are kept out of landfill, their life extended and reducing the consumption of new resources. At The Resource Centre – West Auckland we aim to break barriers to transform the way people understand the value of our earth’s resources. We want to ensure access to affordable resources for creative use and save thousands of tonnes of valuable resources from landfill.
We redistribute resources back out to the wider community, especially to schools and early childhood centres across Auckland. Our centre is open to use by everyone.
We open Wednesdays 12pm to 2pm, Saturdays 10am to 1pm and by appointment when able.
For school holidays, check us out on Facebook or Instagram here:
Groups or individuals that are Not for Profit pay a small donation of $10 and others pay $20 or alternatively we ask that you consider ‘Paying it Forward’ and paying us more based on what you think the resources are worth.
As a Charity we use that funding for things like running our van we use to pick up resources from suppliers and to support our education initatives that seek to change the way we view these resources.
We think education and participation is the key to reconnect people back to their local community and environment. In a world facing the global challenge of climate change, we believe that local innovation and creative, critical thinking, are skills we need more than ever.
Working together for a zero waste future!
The principle of Kaitiakaitanga guides our kaupapa. To help the Whenua sustain future generations we are responding to global climate challenges at a local level. Our dream is that all usable resources do not go to landfill ever! In this way we keep waste out of the tummy of Papatuanuku.
